Gambling addiction

Sexual addiction


Car accidents

Car payments

Flat tires

Blown engines 


Death

Pain

Sorrow

Sadness 


Tragedy

Bankruptcy

Job Loss

Too much week…too little finances


Overweight

Anxiety

Depression

Prozac


Glasses

Hearing aids

Wheelchairs

Braces


Broken Window

Broken Arm

Broken Soul

Broken Heart


Lost keys

Lost wallet

Lost relationships
Lost children


Life is simply a huge risk!

Life is simply an opportunity to invite difficulties.

Life is tough

…it really is!


It is hazardous

It is precarious

It is uncertain



All of these things are true and so we as humans go through life—


With a stiff upper lip we work hard at the great balancing act of life.

We succumb to the pains of life and eek out an existence. We soothe the pains of life with the latest craze:

A new phone

A new relationship

A bigger home

A new car

More dope

More TV

More sex

More vacations


Or

We choose to do life differently.

We seek God.

We side with God.

We surrender to Christ Jesus and serve him. 


Many years ago I read a quote by Billy Graham that went something like this:  ‘I do not serve God because he takes away all my pain—but because he is with me in my pain.’ 


This world is a broken place.  


I am not the least interested in doing life without God.  Life is too difficult.  There are too many potholes, too many risks… so I can, at the very least start off each day trusting and leaning on God.


Perhaps I’m a real incompetent suck—-but call me what you will.  I’m not doing life without Jesus. It’s way too risky!

Meditation I realize as we move on with this series that there are two things that need some clarification.  We already looked at the idea of silence and quietness—this week we will look at meditation.  Let’s begin by giving you the descriptions of the differences between these two disciplines.  Although from an outsider’s position there may be little or subtle differences, I want to help you process the vast difference between these—-and the immense benefit from both of these disciplines: Silence/ Quietness: Here the idea is shutting out your active mind —leaving lots of space for two things.  First, space to give your mind a rest, relaxing your mind.  It is a stopping of your mind from racing around solving all the problems of the world.  Second, giving space to hear from God! God is after you! And... for a different reason than you think!

Have you ever been pursued by a suitor—a lover—someone who is very interested in you? Was it pleasant to be liked?  Was it pleasant to be wanted?  Well, yeah—for sure.  Who doesn’t want to be loved? Who doesn’t want to be sought after?  Who doesn’t want to be appreciated? I do!  I am sure you do too! Did you know that is actually the message of Christmas—and the actual ‘story’ of the Bible?  It’s a story about God pursuing humanity. Too often when we think of God, or church, or the Bible—we think of behaving ourselves enough to get God’s attention.  Or, we think of trying hard to impress God—so that God would appreciate the hard work we are doing down here and give us His nod.
