Boldly go where no man has gone before.
Boldly go where no man has gone before.
I am not a Trekkie guy; however, I did watch some of the early Star Trek stuff a long time ago. I’m not sure what age I processed this, but if one were to get on board the Enterprise and head in one direction, you could do that for eternity. That is boldly going where no man has gone before!
I had a client recently tell me that eternity petrified him. Since that conversation, I decided in some ways, I agree. Here are two things that help me.
First, even though I am a tiny dot in the universe. Even though I am one incidental person in the myriad millions that will eventually be with Jesus in eternity. (Revelation 7:9 (NIV) After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.) Yet, somehow, I can’t explain it, but here I go—there are two things juxtaposed with one another. One is that I am part of a throng of people—literally millions. Two is that, somehow, I’m noticed by God. I am not lost in the crowd. It is like God sees me! He doesn’t see me at the expense of others, but he does see me. It is like I have His undivided attention. It is like a one-on-one with God. But again, not at your expense because you will be experiencing the same thing. Weird.
Second, this eternity business has become an increasing mystery to me. So, it’s okay, I can’t figure it out and can’t process it.
1 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)
Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great:
He appeared in the flesh,
was vindicated by the Spirit,
was seen by angels,
was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory.
So, now I head boldly forward. 1 Corinthians 13:12 (NIV) For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. Heading into the great unknown, but at the same time, heading there hand in hand with my Lord Jesus, who is leading me each step of the way. Don’t let anyone steal the mystery of this great journey you are on!
