Holy Spirit’s Personal Training Program

John 21:20-23 (NIV) 20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

God has designed a spiritual discipline, a spiritual journey, and a spiritual lesson plan specifically for you. There are basic universal principles of spirituality and spiritual growth, but God is crafting you specifically.

1.       Learn principles of spirituality.

2.       Practice spiritual disciplines.

3.       Pray for discernment.  Always ask Holy Spirit:  What are you teaching me now?  How are you training me now?  What are you showing me now?

4.       Always open yourself up to the presence and actions of the Holy Spirit in your life.

5.      Your spiritual journey is not a cookie-cutter approach.  Sometimes you pray fervently for something, and God says, “No,” or “Later.”  Sometimes you go through aridity, and you beat yourself up instead of resting.

6.      The key is discernment, listening to the Holy Spirit and obedience in the various seasons.
